My story

I took the long route in discovering who I was and what I wanted to be…

When I was little, I dreamt of becoming something slightly beyond average. I always felt I had the ability to make a difference, but I had no idea what that would look like. A singer, a teacher, a nurse, an astronaut, a comedian (half-conquered depending on your sense of humour) … I spent a lot of time longing to find my purpose.

My inspiration

“Only People Matter” is something my 94-year-old Grandma, my rock, has always said to me. Being the feisty, wise woman that she is, she’s heavily influenced my view on the world – and this particular phase always stuck.

My Grandma was an evacuee in World War II. She went from rich to poor in an instant, which she says made her understand that true love never requires money. Later on, once she’d met my Grandpa and had my Dad, they travelled around the world together. Wherever she went, no matter the culture, she noticed that it’s our connection with other people - and the relationship we have with ourselves – that actually makes us happy. She taught me this, (repeating ‘Only People Matter’ over and over again!)  which later became my mantra in coaching. Her influence was the spark that ignited my passion for this career path.

My Grandma has experienced some of the most complicated and challenging situations life could throw at you, and now has now sadly been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Ever my inspiration, she still breeds humour, compassion and vulnerability, spreading love everywhere she goes. In my mind, this is the sort of role model we should all be looking up to.

my-story

Because I can be impulsive and indecisive, I found school hard. I was misunderstood and really resented authority, meaning I acted out a lot. To put it bluntly, I was a pain in arse, which massively got in the way of my own progression. This is the reason why I feel so drawn to work with students – it’s a stage of my life I wish I had a bit more guidance.

I left school at 17 and started working. It was around this time that my life became more complicated; core relationships became much more challenging and my self-esteem was at a zero. Some experiences bruised me, others battered me, but I was always determined to push through and come out stronger, which I did with the help of coaching, therapy and EFT Tapping. After working hard on myself, I got to a place of emotional resilience and inner strength

In 2013 I made the (very surprising!) decision to go back to school and study psychology, alongside working in a full-time job running my family business. Having grown up a lot since I was last in the classroom, I had a totally different experience with learning. I was fascinated to learn how the human mind interacts with the world around us, as I learnt that biologically, we have unconscious processes which shape our behaviour. This helped me to understand my own life better, and I started to recognise that we can’t change the people around us, but we do have the power to change ourselves.

Once I received my BSc, I decided to take what I’d learnt a step further and started studying at University of Warwick to become a certified Coach. Now a member of the Association of Coaching, I continue to take CPD courses and have constant supervision to ensure I keep developing my skills as a coach.

I launched Only People Matter in 2018 and now run three services, Life, Business and Student coaching. I’m a one woman band, which comes with its own set of challenges, but ultimately, I absolutely love what I do. Since launching, I’ve been reminded time and time again that this is my calling. I live for seeing my clients make themselves accountable and free themselves from damaging mental blocks.
